Computer Discussions With Nick Francesco

The Rochester Computer Society welcomes back Nick Francesco, founder of our computer user group over thirty years ago, in 1982, when the First Rochester Osborne Group was known as FROG. Nick, along with Dave Enright and Steve Rea, hosts the SoundBytes radio program on Jazz 90.1 FM Saturdays from 12 noon to 2pm. One of Rochester's foremost and best known computer experts, Nick has a website, http://asknick.com and writes a computer Q & A column for the Thursday D&C. He coined the term 'Security Tango' for his step-by-step method of removing gremlins causing computer troubles. Open to the public.

Software Defined Radio

Presented by: Jajiv Dewan - Amateur Radio Operator N2RD

With greater commoditization of hardware, greater and greater portion of the utility of modern appliances is determined in software. This is also true of telecommunication. Open up a cell phone and you will find components that are common across many brands/models. What makes the difference is software.

At an even lower level, the boundary between what is done in hardware and what is done in software is shifting as well. If you compare radios built a scant twenty years ago and those built today, you will find that more and more of the internal processing of the signal, which was previously done using analog circuits, is now done digitally and done using commonly available processors. The ultimate expression of this approach is called the Software Defined Radio.

In this presentation Javiv will describe the changing boundary between analog and digital processing, the current approaches to building modern radios, and the role of hobbyists in advancing the state of the art in radio telecommunication.

Photographic Composition, Part 1

Presented by: Bill Statt

What is the most important thing to get a great photograph? If you pick up a Photo magazine in the local bookstore, it looks like you need a $1,000 camera. After all, all the images they show were taken by expensive cameras. Then, you need very expensive software. Adobe Photoshop is over $700. Of course you need to print it on an expensive Epson printer, probably a large format printer. Not if you are my dad. He prints out camera phone pictures on low quality inkjet paper (not photo paper) and thinks the pictures are great. He even prints out extras to give to friends.

Guess what? In the Cosco national photo competition last year, the winning photo was shot with a Kodak Instamatic film camera and printed at Walmart.

What makes a great photo? Composition. Come and learn about good composition in a 2 session presentation. Bring your camera. If you don't understand some of the settings, we'll show you how.

Getting Unusual Use Out of Your Office Applications

Presented by: Van King

Many computer users need to write large documents at least once in a while. When such a writer is working alone, there are many times when a user needs an extra voice or pair of eyes, much as a carpenter might occasionally need a third hand. The digital camera, an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) program, and an e-text reader can be used together in an unusual collaboration to increase your efficiency (and save money).

Search Engine Optimization

Presented by: Mary Anne Donovan, Vice President - SEO Linking Courses, Inc.

Internet presence is essential for today's businesses.

The competition to be "seen" is intense.

Search engine localization search capability is quickly replacing the
Yellow Pages as the place people look for local goods and services.

Search engine optimization is the process by which a business
can improve its site's ranking with search engines, with the goal
of making it into the top 30 listings on the results page.

Photography BC & AD - Before Computers and After Digital

Presented by: Gordon Brown - veteran of Kodak and an internationally known
speaker and author in the photography field

Gordon will present a Microsoft PowerPoint program comparing digital and conventional photography and how it affects you and your photography. This program is a review of digital photography from the beginning to the present, comparing photographic tasks with what we used to do with conventional photography. It asks, and answers, the questions: "What Have We Lost?" and, "What have we gained?"

In conventional photography, we explore the changes that have occurred in the transition to digital photography from the magic of the darkroom to the magic of the computer.

We examine what has changed, why it has changed, and if it is good for photography and us or not. Some things have changed for the better, and other changes make things more difficult. We will examine which is which and when it is more advantageous to use either system. We will also compare the quality and imaging chain of both systems and why they work as they do, mentioning all of the cautions along the way.

We will also compare the quality and imaging chain of both systems and why they work as they do, mentioning all of the cautions along the way. We will also cover the following functions:

Digital Photography, One Pixel at a Time

Program:

Gordon will present a Microsoft PowerPoint program on digital photography using the digital methods that he covers in his talk. His program will explore the current state of the art of relatively low-cost digital cameras (less than $1,000) and digital imaging. He will also briefly cover high-end digital SLRs. Since the fast-moving pace of the digital imaging world is difficult to keep up with, this program is constantly being updated to make it as current as possible.
In this program, we will explore how digital images are formed, and compare this process with conventional photography. You will learn how to handle, manipulate, scan, print, and make creative digital images. You will see examples of great looking photographic-quality prints made at home on a $300 inkjet printer.
Gordon will also show a demo of a digital camera so that you can see how it works. Digital imaging on the World Wide Web and e-mail will also be overviewed. In this class, you will also see what types of computer and cameras are required for entry-level, intermediate, and advanced users.

Particular attention will be paid to the following elements:

    Why Digital? Why Now?

    What’s a Pixel?

    Similarity to Photography

    Film and Print Scanners

    Enlarging & Printing Images

    Working With Color

    Digital Imaging Software

    Creative Images

    Camera Functions

    Photo & Picture CDs

    Digital Photos on the Web

    Using Digital Software.

    Saving Digital Files

    Image Sharing and Printing

    Digital Darkroom (Lightroom)

    Making a 16 x 20” photo-quality print

    New products.

    The future of digital imaging
